Young LGBTI+ individuals in Vietnam currently face pressures, discrimination, and multitudes of barriers when accessing mental healthcare services. The study was conducted to understand and propose solutions to this issue. The research findings addressed questions about the need for psychological support, experiences when accessing services, and the barriers the community currently faces within the healthcare system. Findings adequately portrayed the current context, while safer and more inclusive psychological support models for the LGBTI+ community were recommended.

Với những người con thuộc cộng đồng LGBTI+, hy vọng Lời Mẹ Kể sẽ tiếp thêm hy vọng cho bạn trong hành trình kết nối với những người thân yêu, để gia đình luôn là nơi bạn được là chính bạn.

Migration has been a constant flow in Vietnam’s history and will continue in the future. Although there have been many in-depth studies on migration, the specific experiences of LGBTQ+ people as domestic migrants remain a major research gap. In this context, in 2024, iSEE Institute and the research team conducted a qualitative study to better understand the experiences of LGBTQ+ migrants, thereby proposing solutions and support services suitable for this group.

The study “Public Opinion on Gender and Sexual Diversity in Viet Nam” was conducted by the Institute for Studies of Society, Economy and Environment (iSEE) and the Institute of Sociology and Psychology, with technical and financial support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam. The study shows that awareness and acceptance of LGBTI communities in Vietnam have improved significantly. Gay men and lesbians have high visibility, and most respondents believe that gender and sexual diversity, specifically homosexuality and transgender identity, are neither diseases nor deviant behaviors. The majority feel relatively comfortable when interacting with LGBTI people, and public support for same-sex marriage and related rights is relatively high.

Lời Mẹ Kể - Câu chuyện của những người mẹ có con là người đồng tính, song tính và chuyển giới.

Di cư đã và đang là một dòng chảy không ngừng trong lịch sử Việt Nam và còn tiếp diễn trong tương lai. Dù đã có nhiều nghiên cứu chuyên sâu về di cư, những trải nghiệm cụ thể của người LGBTQ+ là lao động di cư trong nước vẫn còn là một khoảng trống lớn trong nghiên cứu. Trong bối cảnh đó, năm 2024, Viện iSEE cùng nhóm nghiên cứu đã thực hiện nghiên cứu định tính nhằm làm rõ hơn trải nghiệm của những người lao động di cư thuộc cộng đồng LGBTQ+, từ đó đề xuất các giải pháp và dịch vụ hỗ trợ phù hợp với nhóm đối tượng này.

The study 'Exploring the Lived Experiences of Conversion Therapy Efforts among LGBTIQ+ people in Vietnam' is the first in-depth research in Vietnam focusing on examining the forms, impacts, and consequences of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression Change Efforts (SOGICE) on LGBTIQ+ individuals. The research has demonstrated that SOGICE represents attempts to alter sexual orientation and gender identity - practices that have been assessed as harmful and scientifically unfounded. The findings reveal that all participants had experienced at least two different forms of SOGICE, primarily from family members, relatives, and their social environment. The study analyzes six common forms of conversion therapy, along with their profound psychological, physical, and relational impacts on victims. This represents an important scientific resource that contributes to raising awareness about the harmful effects of forced conversion practices while also proposing essential support needs for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Vietnam. It marks a breakthrough in comprehensively understanding and evaluating the conversion therapy experiences of LGBTIQ+ people in Vietnam.
