Under one roof: Exploring the experiences, challenges, and needs of same-sex couples in Viet Nam

The report “Under One Roof” delves into “non-traditional” family models, showing that same-sex cohabitation in Vietnam is not a marginal or temporary phenomenon, but is becoming an increasingly stable and socially significant form of intimate cohabitation. Many same-sex couples actually function as family units, sharing responsibilities, care, and long-term commitments in ways similar to heterosexual couples. At the same time, issues related to legal recognition and protection remain topics requiring further research and policy discussion in the future. The report presents policy implications at three levels: 1) legal level, 2) policy level, and 3) social level; with a phase-by-phase approach, prioritizing the resolution of practical gaps and difficulties in daily life, while creating space for broader discussions on rights and recognition of relationships.
